Cuil dot com – A Review So Far

Search Engines are the most important tools for Webmasters. The latest buzz in the search engine zone is the introduction of Cuil dot com created by ex-google employee, Anna Patterson. The amount of press releases for this search engine was really something else. Cuil must have been the most visited new site in the history of new sites. Before you go posting about your opinions, I thought I’d give my readers my views on this new buzzer.

  • Cuil loads fast, perhaps faster than Yahooo.  Google still is the site that loads fastest for me.
  • Cuil has a great domain name, Cuil means “wisodom” in Irish.
  • Cuil has a great interface. It provides results in a comphrehensive catagorized display.

  • The above picture shows my search on Cuil for “New York”. The results were decent at first glance but completely irrelevant. The links point to non-professional like results that I did not like at all. I did a search for Cuil on Cuil dot com. Check out the pathetic results.

  • Even though they provide a more informative result page, what is the use if the result are not relevant. Google still dominates the arena with a perfect balance of links and information.

True, Cuil has potential but right now IMHO, it should be focusing on quality rather than trying to pull down the king of search engines, Google. Cuil is great for public users who like the looks and the display. But for us webmasters, our fingers still tap up “google.com” whenever in doubt.

You can’t call it “EPIC” :D I’d say, needs a lot of work :)

Apparently Cuil was not quite ready for launch during the first day or two – many medium long tail queries did not return results at all, and even general queries returned way fewer results than they should have considering Cuil’s claims of having indexed so many pages already. They did improve somewhat afterward, however, and seem to be picking up more results and increasing relevance as more people have been testing out the engine.

In the long run, I hope they get things together and perform well enough to compete with the major search engines and then maybe do some advertising. I would like to see more serious competitors to Google in order to hold their power in check and encourage more transparency overall.

A lot of members on forums were upset that in the begining the search engine was not picking up their best sites. No doubt that they are getting better.
